ONLY 5.9% OF MUSIC PRODUCTION CREDITS WERE HELD BY WOMEN & GENDER NONCONFORMING PRODUCERS LAST YEAR.
WE WANT TO FIX THAT.
Women & gender nonconforming producers bring immense creativity & skill to music, yet access to studios, mentorship, & clear career pathways remain drastically uneven. Imagine all the great art we're missing out on by not having equal voices represented in the creation process.
Derby's goal is to expand equity in music production by supporting women & gender nonconforming producers through free studio residencies, educational opportunities from established producers, & community-driven programs that remove barriers & build sustainable, long-lasting creative careers.
HOW DO WE DO IT?
-
We believe community brings opportunity.
Our residency supports producers by offering free studio access, links to sessions, & mentorship opportunities for select groups of producers who we feel just need the gas to make their career explode. Each residency lasts 2 months, but the benefits extend beyond the program.
The goal of the residency is to foster community & bring opportunities to residents for the duration of their career. We know the music biz is a marathon, not a sprint, & we want to run it with producers.
-
WHAT IS AN OPEN SESSION?
We invite an established woman/GNC producer to sit down with our residents to open up a recording session & go track by track explaining how they made their song. We then host the convo online for others to learn from.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Seeing real-world applications of producer techniques & tips & tricks is a game-changing method of learning. Learning by watching & asking questions promotes collaboration & confidence, & prevents producers from being siloed.
EDUCATION OUTREACH
We film each discussion & house them on YouTube as a free open-source educational resource. This will allow any up & coming producer to learn production from someone who looks like them.
-
Our quarterly writing camps bring producers together with artists & songwriters through close partnerships with publishing companies, management companies, & labels. They're designed to spark real creative chemistry, build lasting relationships, & make great art that turns connection into momentum.

Did you know that only 5% of producers that were credited on label releases in 2025 were women or GNC producers?
& did you know that a woman/GNC producer has never won producer of the year at the Grammys? & only 9 out of the 160 producers who have been nominated in the category have been women/GNC?
We think those numbers are ridiculous.
Imagine what stories we’re missing out on by those numbers being that low! Imagine the great art that has yet to be made!
Women/GNC producers offer fresh, creative perspectives. We want to do everything we can to help fill the gap.
